A European ERASMUS+ project to tackle Disablist Bullying

Disablist bullying is when people are bullied because they have a disability.

What is disablist bullying?

Disablist bullying may be carried out by both those with and without a disability and includes similar types of bullying such as physical, verbal, gesture, exclusion and extortion bullying.

Did you know?

The National Disability Authority (NDA) found that individuals with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), are more likely to be bullied than individuals without SEND.

Exclusion vs Inclusion

People with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities are often excluded in and outside social situations because people don’t understand a person’s disability.

Seek Support

Disablist bullying is harmful as it is based on prejudice and targets may not know how to seek support or express what they are experiencing.

Final sessions of the Irish Piloting/Evaluation of the DisAbuse Modules

The final sessions of the Irish Piloting/Evaluation of the DisAbuse Modules was completed. We wish to thank everyone for their efforts to attend, their enthusiastic participation and the tremendous input received.

Next October 15, together with the meeting of the DisAbuse project that will take place at the University of Murcia, a conference will be held on the subject of bullying and cyberbullying that people with SEN/D have. Professor Pilar Arnaiz, who is an expert in the topic of people with SEN and who has directed a thesis on cyberbullying, will participate in this conference. She will give us her perspective on this problem.

IADT have been holding focus groups with Sen(D) users in small groups to get their views about disablist bullying. We have been gathering feedback on an early stage prototype instructional multimedia application that we are developing at IADT to teach about staying safe from bullying, both face to face, and in an online environment.The feedback so far from the users themselves has been very positive.

The International Conference and DisAbuse Workshops aims to present the project outcomes at the end of the training programme implemented in Ireland, Italy, Spain and Portugal.

Lego Serious Play Session in DCU

In advance of the piloting of the DisAbuse project in 2019 Fiona Weldon & Lian McGuire of DisAbuse, in incorporation with the DCU Lego Education Innovation Studio, facilitated an evaluated Lego Serious Play session on Anger & Bullying with the members of the Bullying Advocacy Group. Participants discussed Bullying and Healthy / Unhealthy Anger and examined how Lego Serious Play can facilitate insight into the effects and outcomes of both kinds of Anger on Bullying.

The partners held another Skype meeting on June 28th 2018. The purpose of this Skype meeting was to discuss feedback from the partners re the initial draft of the DisAbuse Trainers’ Manual and the PowerPoints for each Modular Session. The team at IADT are already in the process of assessing some of the items (especially homework) for transferral into a Multimedia format. Alex, Mohammed and Ryan at IADT are building the overall web framework for the interactive components and all partners can now view the first interactive components for review.

The training course of DisAbuse project taking place in Italy was implemented in February and March by Fondazione Mondo Digitale at the Phyrtual Innovation Gym in Rome during four appointments, for a total of 21 hours.

DisAbuse Project presentation at DCU

Fiona Weldon and Lian McGuire of the National Anti-Bullying Research Centre and UNESCO Chair on Tackling Bullying and Cyberspace, presented on Disablist Bullying and the DisAbuse Project to a joint Norwegian / Irish 2 Day Seminar.

The Seminar was part of the joint masters module group specialising in the prevention and intervention of bullying in learning environments between the University of Stavanger Norway and Dublin City University, Ireland.
